This project is for my BFA graduation exhibition, We spent almost half a year to finish this series of installations. We try to use different form of water to connect visitors sense.
In the exhibition we created three independent installations which are connect visitors smell, auditory, and gustation.
Gas is a kind of existence form of water. This device is to simulate interation of visitors via three kinds of smells, including smell of lemon, smell of strawberry, and smell of onion. We set up these smells on the device, and there are three bottles respectively filled with lemonade, strawberry juice, and onion water on the screen. Visitors could take a smell of their favorite one, and once they do so the corresponding bottle cap will open and the liquid will turn into gas with process presenting to them. One smell gives people one feeling; strawberry juice is sweet, lemonade is acerb, onion water is smoky. This device enables visitors to really feel the smells in the screen.
There are five buttons on the desk with each one corresponding to a kind of sound. It may be the sound of drop, the sound of falls, the sound of purling, and so on. We process them into different elements of sound with different tone and rhythm. Visitors can press the buttons at will. Just change the order, rhythm and quantity, and visitor can listen the different music, and enjoy the corresponding video which will appear on the screen. These symbols are composed of all kinds of water elements. Once the way to press button is changed, many unexpected, wonderful and unique music and videos may be created. We hope visitors can blend in our design and hear the sound of water inside of them.
This device has a little trouble in interaction. We hope they can blow the inductors plugged in the device as soon as seeing them. We design many kinds of inductors, such as windmill, bubble-blowing appliance, lips, and so on. After test we found that visitors are more interested in lips inductor which is a screen with four mouths all around and a row of bubbles on the screen. Visitors can blow the inductor from fore directions and the bubbles will be blown to the corresponding direction. The different blowing intensity will cause different scatter status of the bubbles. Thus, the visitors will be given a false impression that they already blow these virtual bubbles in 2D screen. Besides, the exhibition day is a Chinese children’s day, many parents take their kids here for a visit. We wish it can bring them happiness.
As for the logo on the whole set of work, we want to express the concept that water can integrate with everything. Therefore, we adopted the form of free combination on Chinese characters and English words. The simplicity and ruggedness of each Chinese character get together with the compactness of English letters. Try to create a complementary aesthetic perception in shape. They are inclusive while independent from each other.
In addition, we designed a serious of derivatives, including medals, bookmarks, brochure, postcard, and dolls with exaggerated facial features.
